We consider the larger context of our impact. This goes beyond profit. It’s about being conscious of our influence on personal, public, ecological and economic well-being.
In 2016, Being was the first Dutch development company to call itself a certified B Corporation®: a company that is legally required to consider the impact of its decisions on its workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment. This is a milestone that demands ongoing care, attention, and accountability, and includes a recurring certification procedure every three years, that independently evaluates the impact of our projects. As development companies go, this makes Being a more trustworthy and reliable partner to collaborate with on projects.
Being aims to do business in an environmental friendly and socially ethical way. Applying ESG principles across our operations allows us to monitor the impact of our actions on sustainability and social responsibility. ESG has become an internationally recognized standard for responsible business, rooted in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
E stands for Environmental, S for Social, and G for Governance. Our ESG strategy keeps us focused on every aspect of the real estate lifecycle, keeping our focus on what really matters: making a positive impact.
Sustainability is at the heart of how we operate. By embedding it in every decision we make, we ensure Being remains future-ready. We orchestrate, develop and manage real estate guided by six impact pillars: personal, public, ecological, economic, company and industry—projects designed to create lasting value for people, communities, and the planet.
How will the project be perceived, used and experienced by an individual? Design, functionality, materialisation and experience of a constructed environment have specific effects on a person’s well-being. We take these psychological features into account from the start.
What is the project’s impact on the environment, in terms of construction, materials, waste and energy efficiency? What are the short and long-term effects of a new construction, on a local and global scale? We strongly advocate construction following circular principles.
How does the project create value for the local community? How well does it integrate into its local environment? Does the project contribute to the well-being of a neighbourhood, or city? Having awareness about its significance and potential positive effects on the people that live and interact with it, forms a crucial element of our approach.
Social growth, environmental benefits and economic growth can and should co-exist. For sustainable success of any project, it is of vital importance to take the commercial and economic value, for all stakeholders into account. That’s why we are committed to effective dialogue and healthy relationships with investors, employers, governments, and other stakeholders.
How did the project help our company and employees to grow, as an organisation and as individuals? A business can thrive when its members feel that their contribution matters. Monitoring how a project development has been perceived by our team, and how it has influenced such aspects as our expertise, know-how, or our network is beneficial to lasting impact.
Another manifestation of ‘being part of something bigger’, this is the law of attraction in action. How did the project help our industry move towards becoming more sustainable and social? Together we seek a progressive future.
By measuring our actions and translating our impact into concrete facts and figures, we take responsibility for the choices made in 2024.
