The renewed Aurora will be a combination of character retention and innovation. The ambition is to modernize the building and make it more sustainable and green with respect for the history and unique characteristics of the building. By adding a new roof structure, green roof terraces and a vertical conservatory to the existing structure, various outdoor spaces and meeting places are created that strengthen the connection within the building and to the surrounding area. The aim is to obtain an A++ energy label and BREEAM and WELL certification for the building. All sustainability measures contribute to a comfortable and healthy living environment. The focus lies on social cohesion, less noise, less heat stress and air pollution and a pleasant living environment.
The Aurora Building forms a prominent landmark at the intersection between Centrum, Zuid and West and is one of the first modernist anchor points of the city of Amsterdam. In the 1960s it was designed by the well-known Dutch architect Piet Zanstra for the life insurance company Aurora. It is characterized by an elegant curve in the facade, which runs almost parallel to the curvature of the street corner. The remarkable building consists of a commercial ground floor with spacious office floors of almost 1,000 m2 above.
