story

At Binnenwegplein 12-22, we’ve reimagined a part of Rotterdam’s history for the future. The result is a modern and sustainable retail space that enhances the energy of Binnenwegplein and the nearby shopping streets.

the idea

This distinctive building, which had become partially unused, has been extensively renovated and upgraded for sustainability. The structure has been future-proofed through work such as restoring the brickwork, updating the facade, and installing modern escalators, elevators, and energy-efficient insulation. The roof and rear facade have also been insulated to improve both sustainability and comfort.

Ways of making impact

Binnenwegplein is a vibrant destination, popular with both Rotterdam residents and visitors. The blend of pre-war and post-war architecture gives the square its unique character, along with crowd favorites like Bram Ladage and the Donner bookstore. The building was originally constructed in the 1950s for the Esders clothing store. After this extensive renovation, it is now ready for a new chapter in the history of Binnenwegplein.

Bas van Dam, developer

"With this renovation, we have not only given this unique building new life, but also enhanced the character of the surrounding area. A significant step towards a more sustainable and vibrant Binnenwegplein."
